Why EGODRIFT motors are hand-wound

At EGODRIFT we rely on the art of hand-winding for every single one of our motors (with no exception) — from RC helicopter motors to UAV and industry applications. Machine winding would certainly be faster, cheaper and easier. Here is why we don’t use it:

1) Fill grade — packing more copper

The fill grade describes how much copper you manage to fit into the bell around the stator arms. A winding machine relies on bigger (and static) tolerances and cannot adjust its winding routine the way an expert can with every single lobe. Our winders wrap, pull, push and fit the wires around the stator by hand, reducing the empty space between windings to a minimum. Think of empty space in the bell as wasted potential: for copper on the stator, the one thing that holds true is — the more, the better.

2) Quality control — every motor passes through expert hands

Winding by hand means every motor is inspected by the person building it, at every step — many of our team members have been with us for years, and it shows in the consistency of what leaves the bench.

3) The custom stator platform

Our motors are built on EGODRIFT custom stators with 0.15mm laminations (and 0.1mm on the latest Eclipse models, the 4730EC and 4726EC) — both finer than the 0.2–0.35mm hobby standard — for reduced eddy currents, cleaner commutation, and the cool operating temperature our motors are known for.
